"Park
Point Light"
This
is from an old photo of the oldest lighthouse in Duluth, Minnesota. Located
at the end of Minnesota Point, the six mile long spit of sand extending
into Lake Superior, this lighthouse was the first constructed at the western
tip of Lake Superior. This painting recreates what it possibly looked like
in 1865.

For thousands of years, lighthouses have been an important part of maritime life all over the world. They have made the safe navigation of treacherous waters possible. The life of a lighthouse keeper in the past was a lonely one. Families were cut off for months at a time from all contact with civilization except for the occasional visit of an inspector or delivery of the mail.
